Why it Matters:

Remember last week we spoke about the facet joints? The disc resided towards the front of the body in relationship to the facet joints. Between the facet joints and the disc is where the nerve passes from the spinal cord (check Instagram for visuals)@promovechiroperformance.

The center of the spinal disc is viewed as jellylike, and is called the nucleus. The outer bands are very tough and arranged in an annular fashion to “hold the jelly in”. This band is called the annulus. These outer fibers have been designed to withstand massive amounts of pressure and to absorb forces through the spine. As you can imagine, gravity may be its biggest opponent.

Picture your car tire. As you turn left or right, more pressure will be placed in one directions putting more pressure on that area of the rubber barrier. There are times when this pressure becomes too much for the outer layer to withstand, and can cause a little bulge.

Once again, picture your car tire with a little bubble poking out of the sidewall. That will represent the bulge of the disc. If continuing to drive, and turn on that tire it may burst through the outer layer. That would be considered a extrusion. The air leaving the tire being the nucleus of the disc of course. Yes, each level of vertebra have a disc between them. But, as you may already assume, the low back is the most common area for a disc herniation.

And it may surprise you to know that no two patients who've come to us seeking treatment for a herniated disc in Dundee/Midtown Omaha are alike.

Research is Pointing Toward Chiropractic for Disc Issues

Recent studies have shown that conservative treatment options like chiropractic adjustments can be more effective than spinal injections for treating disc issues. The difference can be the perception. I can have 1 visit and get an injection and be done (with a less chance of healing), or you’ll go through 4-6 visits over a few weeks (but have a better chance of healing).

Still more studies have shown that movement, reducing stress inside the discs, and opening up the channels your nerves pass through can improve how you feel and help accelerate the healing process.

Consider that disc herniation is most often the result of a gradual, aging-related wear and tear.

As we age, our discs become less flexible and more prone to dysfunction - oftentimes, most people can't pinpoint the cause of their herniated disc.

Sometimes, lifting a heavy object with your back rather than from your legs can lead to a herniated disc; the same can happen if you don’t have the support you need to turn while lifting said object.

It’s easy to see why maintaining disc health is so important.

Making time for regular exercise, making it a point to maintain good posture, and getting screened and adjusted regularly by your favorite chiropractor are so important to ensuring the health of your spinal discs.

●   Exercise helps stretch and strengthen the muscles that stabilize and support the spine.

●   Practicing proper posture also helps reduce excess pressure on your spinal discs.

●   Chiropractic adjustments help maintain proper motion of the spine as a whole.

Remember, your body has an incredible ability to heal itself, and that’s what we’re here to help you with, especially if you've been looking for an alternative or more holistic treatment for a disc herniation in Dundee/Midtown Omaha.
